I've long had a desire for a pair of really nice looking tall leather boots.  For years I though this was too girly, but sometime during the peak of my knees problems, I promised myself that if my knees ever got better, I'd get them.  Well, my knees are headed towards better, but I'm finding it hard to find the exact boots I'm looking for.

I want calf high, black, stacked (not stiletto) heels, no more than about 1-2" high, and a simple design.  Something like these is pretty close.  I think the style is usually called a riding boot.  Unfortunately, three stores and many websites later, I haven't found anything that fits me the way I want.  I have small calves, and apparently the fashion right now is for looser boots that you can tuck your pants into, so all the boots I've tried are far too loose on me.  I'm starting to wonder if I should give in and get a pair of ankle boots this year and wait until next year to look for tall boots, in the hope the styles will have changed.

Have you looked in to actual riding boots, like from a equestrian supply? I find that many actual riding boots are not designed to be particularly comfortable for walking (they expect your feet to be in a different position), but they do usually come with a variety of calf sizes, and I don't know how different they would be in comfort from a fashion shoe.

I haven't, maybe I should. I am worried about comfort as well, since my knees are still far from perfect, and I don't want to make them worse.

Hah! I was actually going to suggest that too! Supposedly Ariat makes very comfortable boots that you can actually walk around in, though those were lower paddock boots that I heard several instructors singing the praises of. If you decide to go boot shopping at an equestrian store and want company, I need to pick up new riding boots soon anyway.

FYI, I just got these leather, fleece-lined Middleburg tall boots at the Dover store in Plaistow, NH:

FWIW, Middleburg believes in small calves (I had to go a size up to fit at the calf), and Mountain Horse believes in more normal sized calves. I didn't try on any of the Ariats since I couldn't quite pull my eyes off the price tags.
