Charities

I've been thinking lately about how I give to charity.  It's been quite haphazard in the past; I would like to think more clearly about which causes I want to be giving to, which organizations best support those causes, and to give more consistently.

I've come across the idea of trying to give 10% of your income a few places, which seems like an admirable goal but a bit high for me at the moment.  I think I'm planning to pick a dollar amount that I would like to aim for giving this year and roughly divide it between the groups I pick.     [profile] frolain has decided instead to pick a monthly amount and give it to a different charity each month.  I'm curious how other people do this.

The groups I'm interested in giving to at the moment include the ACLU, the Boston Public Library and my high school.  The BPL and my high school are there because they're places I personally benefited from and I would like them to be able to keep helping other people.  I would also like to find some environmental groups, but I haven't quite figured out what flavor of group; I'd be interested if anyone has groups to suggest.  I'm possibly interested in giving to the Big Jimmy Fund, but not until I finish paying off my student loan to MIT in a while.

There are many other groups I like and causes I support, which makes me keep thinking 'oh, what about that one?', but I think I would rather focus on a few groups than give a little bit to a large number.  I guess I would be most likely to add more groups if they're small, local organizations, where I feel that a little bit of money would make more difference than a large organization.
