Apr. 22nd, 2007 08:39 pmIn a marathon of gardening, I have finished almost all of the garden work I planned on doing over the next few weeks. It's nice to not have a giant list of tasks that need doing as soon as possible. I started by taking the finished compost out of the pile saturday morning, which had the not-unexpected effect of causing rotting vegetables to spill everywhere as the pile fell over due to my removing the bottom. (Really, it was kind of impressive.) I suspect a new style of compost bin is on my list of garden tasks for the year to reduce the amount of digging required.
J and S came out in the afternoon to help, and we: planted the bamboo plants, potted the huckleberries, re-potted the blueberry, cut down and dug up a small rosebush and a giant monstrous one, moved the butterfly bush, put out the supports for the peonies, and removed various dead stumps and minor volunteer rosebushes. It was great to have helpers, everything seemed to get done quickly.
I then followed up this morning by planting the calla lilies and dahlias I'd been wintering in the basement, severely trimming the giant rose in the grape arbor, building a cage for the blackberry (which didn't go as well as hoped, I should have done it when it was younger and more flexible,) seeding the bare patches of lawn, planting my new bleeding hearts, and watering everything.
The next project is probably going to be repairing the grape arbor. J and I are planning to go looking for some big old pipes to replace the missing support and edge pieces next sat. We're trying to get it done soon, as it'll get harder when the grapes start leafing.
