Last weekend was Falconridge folk festival.
frolain and I drove up thursday morning with a few other people, and arrived in the early afternoon. The new location (FRFF moved this year because the farm it was on was sold and the new owners wanted to farm instead of having 10,000 people walk all over it each summer) was amazingly similar in the layout of stages, food vendors, first aid, etc, everything except the camping. Camping was already pretty full in the areas we'd hoped for, but we eventually found a place on relatively flat ground. No shade, but near the showers. This turned out to be a great spot, in my opinion. We'll have to try for something nearby again next year. We set up camp in the hot sun, which continued through friday. I managed to avoid a sunburn, though several other people got them.
Saturday, the thunderstorms arrived. About the point we were sitting huddled on a cheap plastic poncho under the very large umbrella, unable to hear the music over the rain, and the umbrella started dripping on the inside, we gave up for a bit and went to hide in the car. Though we'd still been dry in spots when we went to hide, after wading through 6ish inches of water in some places to reach the car, we were soaked through. The rain did give up later and we dried out, though I was jumpy that the storms were coming back whenever a light shower appeared for the rest of the day.
Sunday morning we decided to pack the cars and move them out to the lot near to road since the paths through the camping area were muddy and getting worse as the day went on and more people drove through. Unfortunately, this involved driving on the rather muddy roads, and getting stuck in a large mud puddle. I got to stay in the car and drive while
frolain got out, and, along with S and a random passerby, pushed the car out of the mud. After the cars were safely parked near an exit to a genuine paved road, we went back to the main stage, where we learned we'd slept through a fire the night before. A van up the hill had caught on fire, and the fire dept couldn't get a truck up to it through the mud. We wandered up to examine the carnage. Two nearby (maybe 15ft away) vehicles had burn marks and melted plastic from the heat and the van itself had nothing left but metal and most of one rear tire. The metal wheel rims had even melted and deformed around the edges.
After a light lunch we headed home, where, just as we arrived, I saw the first butterfly I've ever seen in my yard. It was on the butterfly bush no less. This makes me feel like I can actually attract wildlife other than nasty pigeons and squirrels to my yard. It may also have contributed to my focus on butterfly attracting plants when we went to the garden store yesterday.
